This piece is the first entry in a series I made with my St. Longinus and also the Holy Face of Jesus.
Pious tradition is that when the body of our Lord was taken down from the Cross, it was given over to our Lady for her to mourn the death of her Son. Instead of condensing the entirety of the Pietà scene into a small drawing, I decided to draw only Mary and Jesus's faces instead. The sharp perpendicular angle created between the two faces adds to the contrast; every hair and every wound on our Lord's face are shown in simple and thin strokes, along with Mary's tears.
This piece was made using Noodler's "Whaleman's Sepia" ink on a 14x17 sheet of vellum bristol.
