Along with St. Gregory of Nazianzus and St. Gregory of Nyssa, St. Basil was crucial in defining the Trinitarian formula that is still held by all Christians to this day. St. Basil in particular is heralded as the Doctor of the Holy Ghost for his teachings against certain heretics that denied the divinity of the third person of the Holy Trinity.

This portrait is 9x12 inches on vellum bristol paper. What results is an authentic, almost stream-of-consciousness view of my own mental image of this particular saint.

Emperor Charles the Great, more commonly known as "Charlemagne," was the first Holy Roman Emperor, crowned in the year 800. His reign is notable for his conquest and conversion of the greater part of continental Europe. Charlemagne also maintained a friendly and obedient relationship with Rome that would become the standard for medieval politics: in his time, Religion and the common good of his people were absolutely inseparable, and the common good required careful collaboration between secular and religious authority.

Devotion to Charlemagne in the 21st century seems otherworldly, mainly given the last 500 years of church history. Before the Protestant schism, however, Charlemagne was heralded as a sort of apostle to northern Europe. He was beatified in the 12th century, and his relics remain in the cathedral of Achen to this day. Regardless of controversy, Charlemagne, in a way, is almost the Augustus of the Holy Roman Empire, and he started a legacy that would only officially end in 1917.

This portrait is 9x12 inches on 80 lb. sketchbook paper. Somehow, St. Nicholas is a patron of almost anything: brewers, picklers, coopers, children, orphans, peaches, just to name a few.

The original St. Nicholas was a 4th century saint who died shortly after the council of Nicaea in the 330s. He was known for his humility and generosity: legend goes that he was an orphan himself, and when his parents left him a rather large fortune, he generously distributed it to the poor and needy. Another legend states that he publicly punched the heretic Arius at the council of Nicaea, which is why I decided to give him bruised knuckles in this picture.

St. Nicholas was more than a jolly, laughing saint who stuffed himself on cake and loved children. He was a brutally pious man who fasted even from his infancy, who calmed storms by his prayers, who resurrected three children from a pickle barrel, and who publicly and physically retaliated against the dangers of heresy.

This piece is an original fountain pen drawing from my portfolio. I used five different inks to create this piece, and over 20 hours were spent on the final product. My favorite detail is the use of Jacques Herbin's "Emerald of Chivor" as the bluish-green ink: in certain places, and even in St. Nick's eyes, the green ink will shimmer with red when held in the light.

The image itself is 8x10 inches, and the whole paper is 8x10. There is a smudge on the top border of the margin that will be easily covered by a matte; otherwise I am happy to cut off the margins.

This piece was made to match another picture I made of the Pieta, or the Lamentation over the dead Christ. I've always had an affinity for the Passion of our Lord and Passionist literature, and I wanted to honor our Lord in this particular way.

Saint Longinus is a personal patron of mine, and when I first started this piece it was initially a self portrait. As I worked on it more it became less and less recognizeable, but it was the thought to me that counted more than anything. Longinus is the name traditionally given to the centurion who pierced our Lord's side on the Cross. The legend goes that Longinus was going blind, and after thrusting the lance into His side, whether literally or figuratively, the blood of Christ fell on his eyes and he was healed. He was later martyred for his faith--the Roman soldiers who were once his companions cut out his tongue and plucked out the eyes that had been healed by our Lord. He was famous for his preaching and his zeal for destroying Pagan idols.

This piece is 14x17 inches on vellum bristol paper, and the ink of choice was Noodler's "Whaleman's Sepia" in a gold-nibbed Pilot E-95s.

This piece is the first entry in a series I made with my St. Longinus and also the Holy Face of Jesus.

Pious tradition is that when the body of our Lord was taken down from the Cross, it was given over to our Lady for her to mourn the death of her Son. Instead of condensing the entirety of the Pietà scene into a small drawing, I decided to draw only Mary and Jesus's faces instead.
